Hope Sandoval and the Warm Inventions- 'Bavarian Fruit Bread'

When fashion school chicks turn 22 and move to Brooklyn, they cop an apathetic, brooding attitude toward everything and listen Chelsea Wolfe because it compliments their Ann Demeulemeester. They would buy a Scout Niblett record but 'What is she wearing?!
Well, in 2001 those girls were 13 and Hope Sandoval was delivering soul crushing blows to the human spirit. That's it really.

Mazzy Star- 'So Tonight That I Might See'

Staying stationary for awhile...

Cowboy Junkies- 'The Trinity Session' and 'The Caution Horses'

Margo Timmins making it very easy for me to smoke a whole pack sitting alone in the dark. 1988's 'The Trinity Session', featuring the Velvet Underground cover 'Sweet Jane' went platinum in the USA and double platinum in Canada. 'The Caution Horses' released in 1990 features a more polished, pop rock sensibility and contains the singles 'Sun Comes up, It's Tuesday Morning' and 'Rock and Bird'. If 'Trinity' is Van Zandt, I would say 'Horses' is Kristofferson. Neither record does too much for the health of my lungs however.

BSPS- 'Monoliths'

Derrick Cruz has done it again with his new collection 'Monoliths'.
Each "Monolith" is individually hand-carved from wax and cast directly to metal. Metals used include bronze, copper, white brass and Thai gold. No molds are made of any piece in this series, thus each is one-of-a-kind.

THE CAST NYC- 'BITCH CLUB'

My good buddies Chuck and Elisa are getting real down on the Lower East Side.
Do yourself a favor and get your girl into some leathers... And pick yourself up some scumbag tee shirts as well!

Young Buck And 6 Tre G- 'The Realest'

If you download one track this year, this may be the one.
The most important social commentary of the year.
Oh, you don't believe me? Visual proof is provided below.

Boo Rossini And Young Buck- '601 To The 615'

By far the harshest dose of reality I have heard this year. Features tracks with artists Lil Wayne, 6 Tre G, Young Jeezy and Yo Gotti.
Highly recommended and regarded, Imperative to own.

Young Buck and The Future- 'Back For The Streets'

Exceptionally refined street bangers from ex G-Unit member and controversy ridden Young Buck produced by The Future.

Vado-'Slime Flu'

New release from Harlem NYC rap artist Vado. Features brilliant retail content tracks such as 'Polo' and 'Rugby Down'. Ralph Lauren approved.

Screaming Trees- 'Nearly Lost You'

Singles and Debris on Fire...

Superdrag- 'Regretfully Yours' and 'Head Trip In Every Key'

The second full length from Superdrag and quite possibly their best and most layered elaborate work to date including 'Do The Vampire'.

The debut full length from Superdrag released in 1996 on Elektra featuring the singles 'Sucked Out' (a heavily rotated MTV Buzz Bin favorite) and 'Destination Ursa Major'

THECAST-NEW YORK CITY

You Know The Drill...

Candlebox-Self Titled

The self titled debut from Seattle's Candlebox sold more than four million copies and peaked at #7 on the Billboard charts in 1993. It's good, trust me. I don't foresee the DumDum Girls attaining this level of success.

The Keggs-To Find Out/Girl

Possibly the best garage song released in the 60's, 'To Find Out' by Detroit natives The Keggs brazenly rip through two minutes of slurred speech, dissonant guitar, loose drums, and wild abrupt screams. Rumor is that all of the pressings of this record were destroyed in a house fire and shortly after the singer was decapitated on a motorcycle.
My Life...

The Cramps-Psychedelic Jungle

Psychedelic Jungle was released in 1981 on I.R.S. and featured the guitar playing of Brian Tristan of The Gun Club. This is how the contemporary psych rock 'hip-set' bands wish they could sound like except they're not children of the 50's and music pioneering creeps.

Beat Happening-Dreamy

Fourth Studio record from Beat Happening released in 1991. Worth it just for 'Red Head Walking'.

Shudder To Think-So Into You

Brilliant edit of 'So Into You' by Shudder To Think off of The Pony Express Record released in 1994.

Shudder To Think

The last Shudder To Think full length released in 1997 before the group disbanded a year later.

The most underrated alternative rock record of the 1990's from Washington D.C. based Shudder To Think. This was their major label debut from Epic Records.
